During the daytime, wildlife activity is well documented – young males play-fight, mother bears cautiously explore with their cubs at their sides, and solitary adults lumber across the tundra. But it is the rare traveller indeed who has the opportunity to experience the tundra at night, when the northern environs provide an eerie and remote adventure. Day 1: Winnipeg
Gather for dinner orientation at 7pm.
Day 2: Fly to Churchill OR have a Tundra evening & fly to Churchill in the morning.
During the evening there will be an evening presentation on polar bears and the northern environs presented by our professional staff of naturalists and scientists.
Day 3 & 4: Bear viewing
These days will be spent exploring the tundra on our polar buggies where we will view bears and other wildlife. We have also scheduled time to explore the sub-arctic terrain surrounding Churchill – areas where bears tend to frequent. In addition to one full-day tundra excursion, on one of these days we will schedule our tundra vehicle for either early morning or the afternoon with plans to catch the sunrise and sunset when an isolated northern experience.
We will spend the other portion of this day visiting the famed sled dogs (you have likely seen the photos taken of bears playing with the sled dogs) and, if weather and safety conditions allow, exploring the rocky coast by foot. One of the most thrilling activities in the northland is an authentic dog-sled ride and we will schedule a short excursion with the dogs that is sure to excite! We have designed our itinerary this way to take advantage of one of the most intriguing northern outposts in the world, and to expose ourselves to as many captivating ‘arctic’ sites as we can during our adventure. When we journey to the tundra aboard our polar buggies, we travel outside of town by bus and meet our vehicles at a special boarding site. Here, our expedition leader will begin his/her nature interpretation, telling you all about how polar bears thrive in such a harsh environment.
From the warmth and comfort of our vehicle (we only take 15 travellers in vehicles that can accommodate on average 30 travellers, allowing plenty of room for a window seat and to store your gear), we may see mothers and cubs as well as young adult males playfighting. The interaction of these animals is fascinating and our leader will make sure that we see as much as we can. In the evenings we gather for a well-deserved meal before our leaders provide an evening presentation on wildlife or local cultures.
Day 5: Evening on Tundra
7-day trip: we tour historic Churchill, then head out to the tundra for evening bear viewing and dinner aboard the vehicle. During our daytime exploration, we may visit local sled dogs en route to Cape Merry, where we often see Arctic fox and Arctic hare.
If the skies are clear, our nighttime tundra excursion might provide one of nature’s most exhilarating experiences – a chance to view the Northern Lights away from the glare of town. Though they are never predictable, sometimes amidst the darkness of the sub-arctic tundra, the lights begin as a white glow in the northern sky, then begin to flicker and dance in shimmering curtains of color.
6-day trip: (your nighttime tundra journey takes place on Day 2), there’s free time in Churchill or an opportunity for an optional helicopter excursion over the frozen tundra before boarding our flight back to Winnipeg.
Day 6: Churchill / Winnipeg
Our return flights are scheduled to depart in the mid - late afternoon, to offer as much time as possible to explore Churchill. Pick up last-minute native handcrafts and souvenirs or, if time permits, take an optional helicopter journey over the tundra or an authentic dog-sledding excursion.
Day 7: Return Home
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for flights home.
