Information on each Venue for the England Cricket Tour of South Africa 2009 - 2010
- Centurion - SuperSport Park:
Opened in 1985 and is one of the newer grounds in South Africa. It hosted its first test match in 1985 when England were again the visitors. This Stadium is most recognisable for its large grass embankments that constitute a significant proportion of the capacity. The surface character of the pitch is generally quick with the ball coming onto the bat nicely. The seamers tend to be prominent as it offers little assistance for the spinner.
- Durban - Sahara Stadium (Kingsmead):
Kingsmead has hosted Test Matches since 1925 and is right next to the scenic ocean. Its picturesque location is tempered by the fact that bad light and late afternoon thunderstorms can often curtail play. Given the humid conditions, swing bowling comes into its own at this venue. Spinners rarely influence and seamers on each side will relish the opportunity to bowl in potentially helpful surroundings.
- Cape Town - Sahara Park (Newlands):
Set in the shadow of Table Mountain, Newlands is regarded as one of the most beautiful grounds in the cricketing world. The grass embankments have largely been replaced to bring ground capacity up to a healthy 25,000. Its surface is the most conducive to spin in the country and is deemed a 'result pitch', with draws at a premium in Test matches.
- Johannesburg - Wanderers:
Built in 1956 and known as the 'Bullring' due to its intimidating atmosphere, the Wanderers has a capacity of 27,000 and is an intense experience for any visiting side. Hosted the most remarkable one day in history when South Africa successfully chased down an Australian score of 434.
