Special Interest Tours / Birdwatching - Limpopo (South Africa)

General information on destinations that we visit:

Albasini Dam

Albasini Dam is the biggest waterbody in the Limpopo area and supports an extensive array of birdlife including the special White-crowned Night Heron and African Finfoot. The vegetation surrounding the dam also offers rewarding birding.


Pafuri

This area in the northern tip of Kruger National Park has surprisingly diverse habitats.

With low-lying hills being home to:
• Crowned Hornbill
• Mosque Swallow
• Eastern Nicator

Tall mopane and broad-leafed woodland areas support specials like:
• White-breasted Cuckooshrike
• Arnott's Chat
• Racket-tailed Roller
• Arnott's Chat

Then the damp low-lying areas:
• Senegal Coucal
• Black Coucal
• Little Bittern

An exciting part of this area, is the Levubu River:
• Pel's Fishing Owl
• White-crowned Lapwing
• Bohm's and Mottled Spinetails
• Black-throated Wattle-eye
• Lemon-breasted Canary

This wilderness area has awesome scenery and amazing birdlife.


Nylsvley Nature Reserve

The Nylsvley Nature Reserve is situated in the upper reaches of the Nyl River and incorporates the Nyl floodplain, which is the largest floodplain vlei in South Africa. This area is listed as an 'internationally important' habitat for waterfowl and is one of the top birding spots in Southern Africa, having exceptional avifauna. About 370 species have been recorded of which 104 are waterfowl.

The floodplain has extensive reed beds and other habitats include short grassy plains, stands of long rice grass, open water patches, marshes, acacia savanna and broadleaved woodlands.

This is the only site in South Africa where Rufous-bellied Heron are known to breed.

Eastern Limpopo Valley

The Eastern Limpopo River Valley is the area that stretches from Crooks Corner in the Kruger National Park to Musina.

On the river, two of the largest owls in Southern Africa can be found:
• Pel's Fishing Owl
• Verreaux's Eagle-Owl

The river also provides a corridor for:
• Trumpeter Hornbills
• Lemon-breasted Canaries

The wide-open sandy river bottom is ideal habitat for:
• White-fronted Plover
• Ruff
• Marsh Sandpiper
• Comb Duck
• Spur-winged Goose
• Saddle-billed Storks

Often seen soaring in the skies above the river valley:
• Bateleur
• Lappet-faced Vultures
• African Hawk-Eagles

The gallery forest on the banks of the river has:
• Meyer's Parro
• Thick-billed Cuckoo
• Trumpeter Hornbill
• Retz's Helmet-shrike
• Black-throated Wattle-eye
