Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Depart UK (May 2007)

Depart London Heathrow on South African Airways for Cape Town.


Day 2: Cape Town (Overnight at the Cape Cadogan)

Culinary Experience: Canapes and Wine Tasting

On arrival at Cape Town you will be met and transferred to the elegant Georgian-style boutique hotel of Cape Cadogan. In the early evening ride the cable car to the top of Table Mountain and drink a champagne toast as the sun sets. We return to the Cape Cadogan for an informal canapé dinner and an introduction to some of Cape Town’s treat wines.


Day 3: Cape Cadogan (Overnight at the Cape Cadogan)

Culinary Experiences: Cape Malay cooking demo, Caveau wine bar

In the morning, join Cass Abrahams, the doyen of Cape Malay cuisine, for a cooking demo and then feast on the spoils.

The swank, convivial Caveau wine bar in the heart of the city, has won international awards for its witty, exceptionally comprehensive wine list offering a plethora of South African wines by the glass or bottle. Tonight we will test your senses with a presentation on food and wine pairing.


Day 4: Cape Cadogan (Overnight at the Cape Cadogan)

Culinary Experiences: Kalk Bay fishing community

Today we head out to Cape Point to enjoy the amazing and breathtaking views across the Atlantic and Indian oceans. We will stop at Kalk Bay, with its narrow cobbled streets, antique shops and picturesque harbour. Kalk Bay is home to a unique fishing community who make their living from the ocean using antiquated yet dependable hand-line methods. Here, the fishermen`s wives will prepare a wonderfully rustic lunch with the "catch of the day" whilst regaling us with stories of their ancestry.

Day 5: Cape Cadogan (Overnight at the Cape Cadogan)

Culinary Experiences: Lunch in the township, dinner at Buitenverwachting

Continue acquainting yourself with the “rainbow nation” as you visit two diverse communities. Encounter the remarkable warmth, and energy of the township communities of Langa and Kayelitsha. Stop for lunch at Mamma Violet’s for mutton curry and homemade chakalaka and meet members of the community as they drop by on their daily social circuit.

Dinner tonight is a lavish affair at Buitenverwachting, a restaurant consistently rated as one of the Cape’s finest.


Day 6: Riebeeck West (Overnight at the Riebeeck Valley Hotel)

Culinary Experiences: Wine tasting and seafood lunch on the beach

A drive up the scenic West Coast to see the carpets of Spring Flowers and to visit the Rondeberg Private Nature Reserve. Take tea at the conservation centre and visit the herbarium and art gallery.

Stop in at the Darling Cellars for a wine tasting and select wines to accompany a rustic seafood lunch on the beach featuring a smorgasbord of freshly caught line fish.

After a day on the coast head inland through picturesque vineyards and the majestic Cederberg Mountains to the Riebeeck West.


Day 7: Riebeeck West (Overnight at the Riebeeck Valley Hotel)

Culinary Experiences: Boerekos demo, Art Of The Table, Venison dinner

This morning is at leisure and you may opt for a bit of pampering at Riebeeck Valley Hotel’s spa, lie around the swimming pool, or explore the valley.

Spend the afternoon learning traditional Afrikaans cooking including konfyt (Malay-style fruit preserves) and koeksisters (plaited dough deep-fried and plunged into sweet ginger and lemon juice syrup).

A demonstration by Art Of The Table will provide practical tips on creative table decoration and set the scene for a venison-themed dinner.


Day 8: Franschhoek winelands (Overnight at the Franschhoek Inn)

Culinary Experiences: Olive oil, wine tasting, dinner with the winemaker

Join internationally accredited olive oil taster, Mike Meredith, for an educational walk through the olive groves of Kloovenburg Wine Estate, followed by an olive oil and wine tasting.

Lunch is at picturesque Diemersfontein wine estate.

Onwards to Franschhoek for dinner, a quaint French village widely known to be the gourmet capital of South Africa. Dinner will be a superb wine-matching experience with your host.


Day 9: Franschhoek winelands (Overnight at the Franschhoek Inn)

Culinary Experiences: Bread making demo, an African feast

This morning, internationally acclaimed head chef of the outstanding local restaurant, Bread & Wine, will impart creative bread making techniques and offer you the opportunity to try your hand at foccacia, ciabatta and sour dough breads.

Afternoon at leisure exploring Franschhoek.

Dinner at Moyo at Spier is an extraordinary experience. The striking décor and extensive buffet reflect the richness and diversity of Africa’s cultures – a veritable feast of ethnicity.


Day 10: Grootbos, Walker Bay (Overnight at the Grootbos Nature Reserve)

Culinary Experiences: Malt factory tour, gourmet lunch with Christiaan Campbell

A drive through the Overberg brings you to the malt factory in the farming town of Caledon where you will learn about malt production and its culinary uses. Christiaan Campbell, group executive chef of The Collection, by Liz McGrath will drive through to Caledon to treat you to a gourmet lunch at his restaurant.

Your final destination is Grootbos Private Nature Reserve overlooking Walker Bay. Set amoung ancient milkwood trees, each suite has its own balcony from which to admire the sunsets over the ocean. Enticing meals reflect the care taken over menus by the Grootbos’ head chef.


Day 11: Grootbos, Walker Bay (Overnight at the Grootbos Nature Reserve)

Culinary Experiences: Cooking with Fynbos

Choose from a range of activities, including nature walks with an expert nature guide or whale watching - land or boat based.

Lunch is at the Red Indigo with stunning views over the reserve and the ocean beyond. In the afternoon, we will enjoy a coastal excursion with a visit to the Klipgat cave and a stroll on the white sand beach of Gansbaai.

Dinner with Fynbos, captures the extraodinary flavours of the surrounding fynbos in a stylish and imaginative menu.


Day 12: Depart SA

Return to Cape Town via the scenic coastal route, exploring the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens and the resident penguins before going through the quaint villages of Pringle Bay and Kleinmond. After a lunch stop we continue onto Cape Town for your overnight flight back to London on South African Airways.
