Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Fly from London Heathrow to Johannesburg.

Day 2

Arrive at Johannesburg International Airport where you will be met and transferred to Jembisa.  The drive takes you north from Johannesburg to the spectacular Waterberg Plateau, designated by UNESCO as an International Biosphere. The journey takes 3 hours.

Jembisa is a luxurious country house safari lodge set in its own private game reserve at the heart of the Waterberg Plateau in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.  Being originally built as a family home, Jembisa has a wonderful atmosphere of comfort and relaxation. It is a beautifully designed lodge with large, spacious rooms decorated with natural materials in an Afro-colonial style. There is a library, reading room, games room, floodlit tennis court and a salt-water swimming pool.  Massages are available on request.

Game drives are in our 4x4 open Land Rovers with highly trained and experienced rangers who will enthusiastically share their wide knowledge.

Day 3

After breakfast on the veranda you will meet Clive Walker for a morning session at the lodge.  This will be followed by a bush walk. Bush walks are always fascinating and allow you the experience and thrill of walking with rhino.

During a late afternoon game drive Clive and the game guide will point out the fascinating fauna and flora of the Waterberg. There will be a stop to practice some sketching. Clive is also an accomplished photographer.  You return to the lodge for dinner with time to discuss the art of painting African wildlife and landscapes.

Day 4

An early morning game drive with time for some creative sketching before returning to the lodge for brunch and a workshop with Clive.  In the afternoon there is the opportunity to horse ride or take an elephant-back safari.  There will be an evening game drive with sundowners.

Day 5

An early morning game drive followed by a bush breakfast and sketching down by the river.  After lunch there will be an afternoon workshop developing compositions. Then time to relax with evening sundowners on the deck.

Day 6

A full day painting excursion to the spectacular landscape of Sandrivierspoort and Marakele National Park with a picnic lunch. There will also be an opportunity to visit the African art and curio shops in the local town of Vaalwater.

Day 7

Morning game drive.  The day will then be spent transforming your work into finished paintings.  An evening game drive will be followed by a ’bush dinner’ under the stars.  A night drive, looking for nocturnal animals such as leopard, brown hyena, aardvark, civet cats and porcupines returns you to the lodge.

Day 8

The day starts with an early morning game drive followed by brunch.  Before being collected for your return journey to Johannesburg Airport there will be a last chance to swim, play tennis or enjoy a massage.

Evening flight from Johannesburg to London OR an onward flight to another destination in South Africa, Zambia (Victoria Falls) or Mozambique.  See our suggested extensions below.

Day 9

Arrive at London Heathrow Airport.
